Labor Welcomes ALRC Report Into Equality, Capacity and Disability

Labor welcomes the release today of the Australian Law Reform Commission's (ALRC) report into Equality, Capacity and Disability in Commonwealth Laws.

Labor asked the ALRC to inquire into this important issue in June 2013 to coincide with the launch of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The ALRC makes a number of recommendations about how Commonwealth laws could be amended to better support Australians with disability in making decisions about their lives, including in court proceedings.

Labor commissioned this report because we believe Commonwealth laws should not create barriers to Australians with disability exercising their rights.

We call on the Abbott Government to formally respond to the recommendations in the report.

Australians with disability deserve the same opportunity as all other Australians to make independent decisions about their lives.

Labor thanks ALRC President Professor Rosalind Croucher and former Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes AM for their important work on this report.
