STATEMENT

ANDREW LESNIE

With the passing of Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, Australia has lost one of its great cinematographers.

Graduating from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, Andrew commenced his career with TV programs such Simon Townsend's Wonder World and Bodyline.

Andrew came to international prominence for his work as Director of Photography on films including Babe and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series. He received an Academy Award for his work on the first of the Lord of the Rings films, The Fellowship of the Ring.

Andrew was a master of light and shadow and through his craft could capture the magnificence of vast landscapes as well as the subtle emotion of the hundreds of characters he helped bring to life.

Despite the pressure of directing photography on huge film productions, Andrew had the ability to bring laughter to the entire set with an irreverent sense of humour that was uniquely Australian.

Andrew Lesnie was a giant of Australian cinematography. His contribution to the world of film will be missed both in Australia and around the world.
