Abbott Governments $7.6 Billion Broken Promise On Overseas Aid Hits Worlds Poor - Mark Dreyfus QC MP

The Abbott Governments $7.6 billion cut to overseas aid is a broken promise that will hurt the worlds poor.

The Abbott Governments $7.6 billion cut to overseas aid is a broken promise that will hurt the worlds poor.

Mark Dreyfus, Federal Member for Isaacs, said the Abbott Governments cuts are hugely disappointing for the approximate 20,000 supporters of international development in our local community.

There are also 700 businesses and 36 community and church groups who are active around international development issues, Mr Dreyfus said.

In a blow for the Isaacs Cambodian community, aid to Cambodia has been cut by $6.6 million in just one year alone.

Our aid program helps to enhance global prosperity, and Australias own security. The Abbott Governments cuts put both at risk, Mr Dreyfus said.

Australia is a generous country and we can afford to lend a helping hand to those who need it most.

Mr Abbotts $7.6 billion cut to aid in the Budget broke his election promise to increase aid by the Consumer Price Index.

The Abbott Government said it would provide certainty on overseas aid, but all its delivered is chaos, cuts, and broken promises.

In contrast, the former Labor Government nearly doubled the aid budget.
