Federal Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus, helped promote National Water Week by visiting Sandhurst – the only Victorian suburb where every house is using recycled water.
Mark Dreyfus visited the house of Mal and Pam Sandon, two of the almost 2,000 residents who live in the Sandhurst estate and use recycled water every day for gardening and bathroom use.
“It is fantastic to see people like Mal and Pam in the Sandhurst community embrace recycled water, and credit must go to the developers of Sandhurst who planned for these water-saving measures,” Mark Dreyfus said.
“I’m a major believer in recycled water as a water-saving measure, as is the Rudd Government, which has set a national water recycling target of 30 per cent by 2015."
“I’m proud to report in National Water Week that the Rudd Government has been closely tracking progress on this, and we are well on the way to meeting that target thanks to innovative communities like Sandhurst.”
Mal Sandon said that as Victoria’s water resources are being stretched, more communities should be using recycled water.
“Climate change is here to stay,” Mal Sandon said. “It is great to know the water I use out of the hose to water the garden is coming back to me to be used again."
“Recycled water is one of the reasons we chose to move here – it has certainly added value to the property, and I think more estates should have mandatory recycling of water like Sandhurst.”
